Artist Bio

​

 

           Atlanta based cellist, Giancarlo Ortiz is a multi-dimensional artist originally from Miami, Florida. Ortiz has performed studio, commercial, film, orchestral, and chamber music across Florida and Atlanta.

            As an orchestral musician, Giancarlo has performed with various orchestras including the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Gulf Coast Symphony, and Panama City Symphony Orchestra. Ortiz is an avid chamber musician working with various groups and festivals. During his time with contemporary chamber ensemble Polymorphia and the FSU New Music Festival, under the direction of Dr. Liliya Ugay, he has performed works such as Pascal Le Boeuf's Media Control and Annika Socolofsky’s Don’t Say A Word. His time with Miami based Peruvian ensemble Kuyayky has led him to perform Andean music across Miami through community concerts as well as teach and play with the Kuyayky Children’s Orchestra in Jauja, Peru. He has performed in various musicals including Into the Woods, and In the Heights with Amy Davis and Sweet Charity with Thomas Ossowski.

             Collaborations have been an integral part of Giancarlo’s experience as a well-rounded artist. As former principal cellist of the Javacya Chamber Orchestra he collaborated with amazing artists including the Mad Violinist, Darryl Tookes, Glacia Robinson, Derek Menchan, and Mary Bush Smith. As a commercial artist, he has worked with Latin sensational Pitizion, Starlyn Benitez, and Darwin Musicos in Univision and Despierta America. Ortiz has recorded and premiered several projects with Miami Animation and Gaming International Complex (MAGIC) on their short films and games with contemporary classical music composed by Joseph Guerrera. 

             Giancarlo is an ardent educator and teacher working with students ranging from all ages and experience from the beginning to university level. During his time as a graduate assistant at Florida State University, he assisted in enhancing the musicianship of many cellists in undergraduate and graduate programs through lessons and coaching. He served as a teaching artist for Miami Music Project teaching solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire to students in schools across the Miami-Dade County. As a former mentor-faculty member of the Javacya Arts Conservatory, he worked closely with the FAMU Development Research School alongside Patrice Floyd to enhance and enrich the musical opportunities for young Black and Latino musicians in the community.  Currently, he serves as a cello teaching artist with the Atlanta Music Project teaching solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire.

            Giancarlo was born into a non-musical family in 1998 and began his studies at the Miami Conservatory of Music at the age of 11 with Alain Orbiz. Soon after, he was a finalist and prizewinner at the 2015 Young Talent Big Dreams Competition with Kuyayky. He then went on to study at New World School of the Arts where he studied with Aaron Merritt and later with Dr. Bryan Hayslett. After graduating with his Bachelor of Music in cello performance, Ortiz studied at Florida State University to pursue his Master of Music in cello performance with Gregory Sauer. Other influential teachers he has studied with include Dr. Theodore Buchholz, Dr. Diana Golden, Natalie Helm, Neal Cary, and Julian Schwarz.
